Grepped vs SimpleClosure: where should a closing startup sell its data?

Verdict

Pick SimpleClosure if you are shutting down and want one company to run the dissolution and the sale of your code and data; AssetHub is free for its own dissolution customers, and Fast Company, citing Forbes, reported payouts of $10,000 to $100,000 per company across about 100 deals in the year to April 2026. Pick Grepped if you want a listing that several AI labs can see and buy, with payment in as little as 7 days after a purchase. Grepped's homepage says up to 6 figures per workspace; its founder's larger figures are not verified.

How do Grepped and SimpleClosure differ?

They are different kinds of company. SimpleClosure is a startup shutdown service, and its AssetHub matches your code and workspace data with AI labs and other buyers. It also handles other startup assets such as IP and domains, and can license assets while you keep using them or sell them outright (SimpleClosure AssetHub page, October 2026). Since September 2026 it also takes operating and pivoting companies.

Grepped is a marketplace. You list your workspace data, Grepped de-identifies and packages it, and AI labs see redacted previews before buying (Grepped homepage, October 2026). On October 29, 2026 its marketplace showed 270 listed corpora across 14 sectors, from software companies to bakeries and roofing contractors. Workspaces are connected read-only.

How is the price set?

SimpleClosure gives an initial viability assessment, often within days or hours, then shows qualified assets to its buyer network with your approval. MIT Technology Review reported in October 2026 that AssetHub had handled over 150 deals and that one crypto founder netted about $25,000 for his code base. Grepped gives an estimated payout range from a short form, and its terms say estimates are not offers. Its homepage says up to 6 figures per workspace. Its founder posted in October 2026 that average deals had risen to about $1.1M to $1.3M; we could not verify this. See sell your startup's data before you shut down.

How are you paid, and what does it cost?

SimpleClosure takes a percentage only if assets are sold or licensed, and handles receipt and distribution of proceeds. The percentage and payment timing are not published. Grepped pays the company when a lab purchases, in as little as 7 days. Its fees are not published on its site; its partner page refers to splitting "the spread" on each deal, so ask how Grepped itself is paid.

On license length, Grepped's founder has posted about 2-year licenses and a 3-year exclusive license, figures we could not verify. Neither company publishes standard license terms or whether its licenses are exclusive by default.

Which one suits a founder who is shutting down?

SimpleClosure suits founders who want one company to handle the dissolution and the asset sale together, especially software startups with private code plus Slack, Drive and GitHub history. Grepped suits companies with years of records in common tools that want several labs to see a listing. Its homepage does not mention closed companies, so if you are shutting down, ask whether it takes them and how long a listing usually takes to sell. If the company has debts, proceeds may go to creditors and investors first, so check with your lawyer before either sale.

What should you ask both?

  • What percentage or margin do you keep, and what will I receive in writing?
  • Which buyer is licensing the data, and for what use?
  • Is the license exclusive, and for how long?
  • When is the money paid after the sale closes?
  • What access do you need, and how is it revoked after the sale?
